Hi there.
Your problems with XDVI were mostly caused by the move from 300dpi to
600dpi fonts in release 7.6 (xdvi was looking for fonts in 300dpi).
I made a modified version of xdvi for use with 7.6. It's called
"xdvi.new", currently exists on RS6000's, DECs and VAXen and lives in
the sipb locker. The name will be changed from "xdvi.new" to "xdvi"
when 7.6 comes out of staff-test.
(Note that the program won't appear in the SIPB locker until the
locker is released, which will probably happen by sometime tonight.)

PS. for those who care, here is what I did:
* added symlinks for 7.6 600dpi fonts in /usr/athena/lib/tex/fonts to
the link-farm in /mit/sipb/lib/tex/fonts/pk (taking up 1.4M...)
* grabbed the sources for xdvi patchlevel 17 from export.lcs
* changed the default resolution to 600dpi, changed the default font
sizes, shrink factor and density, made buttons do Shrink 2,4,6,8
* compiled and installed stripped binaries. I didn't install the RT
binary since RT releases are frozen at 7.4, I think.
