Rz and sz do work, although you're certainly not the first person to
report problems with them.
Some things to check:
1) Make sure that you have your modem set to the correct data bits,
stop bits and parity (I believe that 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no
parity is what the Athena modem pool is expecting).
2) Before connecting to the dialup machine after connecting to the
modem server, type "term download". This will put the terminal server
into download mode; note, however, that it will disable the terminal
escape sequence (which is normally "ctrl-^ x"), so once you connect to
the dialup server, you won't be able to get back to the terminal
server without logging out.
3) If you're having trouble on a DECstation, try using another dialup
machine type (e.g., VAX). The DECstations seems to have more problems
than the others.
