Date: Wed, 23 Jun 93 18:20:30 -0400 From: Calvin Clark <ckclark@mit.edu> To: bug-sipb@athena.mit.edu Cc: eichin@athena.mit.edu, jfc@athena.mit.edu Since many ftp sites are starting to use gzip for all of their compressed files, gzip is now necessary, not just convenient. I installed gzip directly in the sipb locker; there are no symlinks or scripts or pointers to never-never land, and the source is in sipbsrc. When new versions of gzip come out, I think it would be a good idea to update the version in outland immediately, but leave the sipb one alone for a week or so, just in case the new release introduces some dangerous bug. (Of course, if a new release comes out primarily to *fix* a dangerous bug, then maybe prompt action is in order.) Gzip will be available in the sipb locker the next time the volume is released, which should happen between 5 and 5:30 AM tomorrow morning, if all goes well. -Calvin
