i've installed kcll in the sipb locker.
would it belong in the outland locker instead? from the description in
outland, I'd think it belongs in sipb, but calvin just installed clisp
in outland, and this is similar (but smaller).
This brings up the whole issue of what should be in outland vs. what's
in the sipb locker, which I expect to generate some flamage during the
next meeting. The issues as I see them are:
a) availability
project.sipb is replicated and copied into the athena cell.
project.outland is neither replicated nor copied into the athena
cell.
b) reliability
Programs in the sipb locker should ideally be built, supported,
tested, and stable for as many platforms as possible. Bug reports
should be dealt with as soon as possible.
Programs in the outland locker are as likely to be symlinks to
somewhere in afsland as not. It contains mostly-stable alphas,
betas, and even even officially nonexistant programs. (just ask RSA
about how MIT has banned pgp. :-/ ) We don't guarantee that the
programs will do what you want, do what they say we will, do what
*we* say they will, or even exist at any given time. If anyone has
problems then we'd like to hear about 'em so we can fix them if we
have the time and inclination. It's not unreasonable for programs
to `graduate' from outland to sipb (I expect xmosaic to do this,
actually, given the number of people playing with it, but I'll
probably wait until the next release, which should be Real Soon
Now, and supposedly will even contain a (crude) editor!)
c) space
Not that long ago, things that probably should have been put into
the sipb locker couldn't be, because we didn't have the space in
either the athena or sipb cell copies. this should be less of a
problem now that we have a new (almost filled :-/) disk drive.
thus, some things that might have been put into the sipb locker got
shunted into outland. Also, some things were moved before, into
sipb-cruft. We should figure out what should be where and put
things in either sipb or outland.
I seem to remember thinking about one other issue, but I don't
remember it now; I'm sure someone will remind me soon enough. :-)
