I have never seen the behavior you're describing, and the DECstation
version of xrn hasn't changed since December 1, so I don't know what's
causing it.

This continues to happen when you exit from xrn and restart it?

Does it happen in all newsgroups, or just one?

Are you sure that it's really "catching up?"  For example, if you hit
"checkpoint" right after you quit from the newsgroup, do the article
numbers saved in the .newsrc include the articles you haven't read
yet?

Is it possible that the articles in question are being cancelled?
