This means that the BITNET software at Samford University is
configured to give that error message in response to some or all
commands received over the network. It has nothing to do with the
software configuration here at MIT.

They might have done this in an attempt to reduce system load, or
maybe because they don't want outsiders to be able to check on the
validity of usernames, for security reasons.
