I'm sorry, I refuse to accept that.
You can call it a design flaw or a bug, I don't care. The files foo.1
and foo.2 will both produce the output foo.dvi, destroying one file
WITHOUT WARNING. Producing inconsistent filenames is WRONG.
Maybe I should send a personal flame to the author, who would no doubt
agree.. :-) (that last comment was very tongue-in-cheek)
