I was ust wondering who decides to remove articles from the groups
once they get too "old".
The news maintainers modify a configuration file on the news server
which controls the program that decides when to delete old articles.
Right now, that file looks like this:
# hold onto history lines 28 days, nobody gets >90 days
/expired/ x 28 -
/bounds/ x 0-2-90 -
# real noise gets thrown away fast
junk,control x 1 -
news.groups x 1 -
bionet.molbio.genbank.updates x 4 -
# Expire a few of the bigger groups more quickly
alt.sex.pictures x 1 -
alt.binaries x 1 -
alt.romance.chat x 1 -
alt.fractals.pictures x 3 -
comp.binaries,k12 x 12 -
rec x 12 -
comp.sys u 12 -
alt.security x 21 -
soc,talk,alt x 10 -
athena,mit x 21 -
usa-today x 28 @
# default: 14 days
all x 14 -
As you can see, the entire alt.sex.pictures and alt.binaries
hierarchies are expired after only one day, because we do not consider
the traffic in them to be very important and because they take up a
lot of space.
Having asked that, how come the pictures in
alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.female/ male and
alt.sex.pictures.male/female always get removed very quickly
compared with most other groups?
if at all possible, could you leave them there a little longer?
Since we recently got a large increase in disk space, I have increased
the expire times on alt.sex.pictures and alt.binaries to two days.
However, if we find ourselves running low on disk space again, they
are going to be the first to go.
