The BITNET software on charon seems to be running OK now, and should
be available for general use.
This means that you don't need to give an MITVMA account to someone
who wants to communicate interactively over BITNET. Instead, the
canonical answer can be
add sipb; man bwrite
(SIPB is, of course, still allowed to give out MITVMA accounts for
certain reasons, which is probably a topic for some sort of future
discussion.)
Some of the things I'd like to do next are:
- send mail to active users of SIPB-sponsored MITVMA accounts,
telling them about the new method
- send mail to some Athena users (mostly IS staff) who have asked
me about using the software
- post a suggested replacement for the olc stock answer
"INTERACTIVELY Communicating with BITNET Hosts"
I put a draft of the latter in /afs/sipb/project/doc/bitnet/stock-answer.
I also put one other file in that directory, called bitnet-info, that's
more of an "everything you never wanted to know" type of thing.
