I've patched xrn so that it will display a warning and ignore
newsgroups with '!' or ':' in their names in the active file, and I've
sent the patch back to the maintainers of xrn.
It will *not*, however, tamper with bogus newsgroups already in the
.newsrc file, because I think that's probably a bad idea.
