When the news server is down in such a way that connects on the NNTP
port return EOF immediately (for example, if the nntp server binary
does not exist), rn and xrn return a bad message. They say:
Unexpected response code from news.mit.edu news server: 0
A better message would be
Unexpected EOF from news.mit.edu news server
or
Unable to connect to news.mit.edu news server
with possibly an additional line explaining that this is a software
problem on the server.
I have modified xrn's version of clientlib.c so that it will notice
and properly report premature EOF. The new version of xrn is
installed for vax, rt, decmips, rsaix.
The new version of rn is waiting on Ted.
