Running rn when the news server is disabled results in a message like:
Unexpected response code from news.mit.edu news server: 400
The error message should include the error message returned by the
news server:
% telnet news nntp
Trying...
Connected to BLOOM-PICAYUNE.MIT.EDU.
Escape character is '^]'.
>> 400-News is currently down because of software maintenance.
>> 400 Please try again later.
Connection closed by foreign host.
