Alternatively, another reasonable approach would be to modify the
function so that it only treats a window as the root window if that
window is mapped. That way, when xscreensaver is unlocked, its window
won't be mapped, and xmartin will ignore it.
That's a change that might even be reasonable enough to forward back
to the author of xmartin, if you feel like making it. I don't :-).
