xscreensaver bug?

That probably means that xscreensaver and your window manager are
starting up around the same time -- your window manager is grabbing
the pointer while configuring, and therefore xscreensaver can't grab
it.
There's nothing to be done about it inside xscreensaver --
xscreensaver does need to be able to grab the pointer in order to
lock. The best you can do is to put a sleep before the invocation of
xscreensaver so that it doesn't try to grab the pointer until after
your window manager has finished initializing.
