The United States is teetering on the precipice of a new dark age.
I've watched with increasing horror as the US has shifted further and furth=
er to the right. With each new bigotry let out to air, with each new veiled=
remark, I naively hoped that perhaps this would be the time that the mains=
tream media would actually do its job and call toxic racism out for what it=
is. Instead, the media gave weight to the factually bankrupt opinion that =
President Obama is not a US citizen - a claim that they could easily refute=
with basic research - and called overt use of racial slurs merely "controv=
ersial."
Each time I've hoped that the media would do its job, it has failed not onl=
y me, but the nation as a whole. Meanwhile, Truthout is facing financial tr=
ouble (we need your help!), at the time when this nation needs our ethical =
standards and no-nonsense reporting more than ever.=20
I've watched in horror as Republican candidates dial up their racist rhetor=
ic, every new election cycle becoming more unabashed and less criticized th=
an the last. Now, in 2015, we have a front-runner for one of the most power=
ful political seats in the world agreeing with a supporter whose words woul=
d fit comfortably in the political climate of 1940s Germany.
If this sounds alarmist, it is, frankly, because I'm alarmed. Racism in the=
US is boiling over, due in no small part to media that refuses to hold any=
one accountable. Without media that does its job, those most vulnerable to =
the violence that follows the heels of racist rhetoric =E2=80=93 me, and pe=
ople like me =E2=80=93 are in very real, physical danger.=20
