<P>We asked several students to review the TI-89 and let us know what they
thought. Below are a few of the reviews that we got back.</P>
<P><B>Review from Mandy at Foreman High School in Illinois </B><BR>In reality, the TI-89 is
really more like a Palm Pilot than it is a calculator, given some of the
features it has. For example, the TI-89 promises not to become obsolete quickly,
due to its upgradability. Even without this feature, however, I doubt the TI-89
would become useless for some time -- after all, I used a TI-85 (which was about
8 years old) for three years of high school and three years of college. </A><A

<P><B>A Review by Jack from Camden Hills in Maine</B></P>
<P>For all of you out there that have to have the best of everything, this is
your calculator. Besides the TI-92, this is the best calculator Texas
Instruments has to offer. I am going into my senior year as an Electrical
Engineering Major and I wouldn't have made it this far without this calculator.
It is a necessity for any math or engineering major. <A

<P>&nbsp;</P>
<P><B>A Review from Kevin at Miami Springs High School in Florida</B></P>
<P>For three years of high school math (precalculus, calculus, and linear
algebra), I happily used my school-issued TI-83 plus. It was perfect for
precalculus, and it was useful for calculus, too, but by senior year I was
taking multivariable calculus, and I decided I was tired of pounding out
integrals by hand.</P>
<P>Enter the TI-89.</P>
<P>The best part of the TI-89 is its power. It performs "symbolic manipulation,"
which means that it can do calculations on equations and functions instead of
just numbers. For example, the TI-83 and TI-86 can both calculate numeric
integrals using "FnInt." Enter a function and two bounds, and it will calculate
the area under that curve. The TI-89 can do this, too, but it can also take the
antiderivative itself!</P>
<P>Symbolic manipulation has other wonderful applications: add a fraction to a
fraction and it displays the result as (gasp) a fraction! You can factor an
expression, or you can take the derivative of a function. Also built-in are
capabilities for summing series, finding limits, and calculating arc lengths. <A

width=3D629> <BR>A Math Teacher's Story<BR>george@symcom.math.uiuc.edu (John
George)<BR><BR>Years ago, I was taking an algebra class over the summer, and had
a teacher who liked to reminisce about his past with funny stories. He relates
that he had been a math teacher in the Air Force, where it was his duty to force
sleepy young recruits to stay awake for an hour of math at 8:00 in the morning
in a large, warm, dimly-lit auditorium. One day, he came into the auditorium and
saw his class even sleepier and less attentive than usual. He realized that
something drastic would have to be done.</P>
<P><BR>Now this classroom was very
old, and the blackboards, which had been nailed on to the walls with old black
iron nails, had become loose over the years. As a result, these black nails
jutted almost invisibly from the blackboard and this teacher kept banging his
hands on them while erasing the board. He decided to put them to good use.
