Once, at a media conference, a professional schmoozer asked me for the inside scoop on Truthout's future: "Are you guys scheming up a plan to dominate the market?"
"Nope," I replied. "Trying to dominate the market isn't our thing."
The word "dominant" comes from the Latin "dominus", meaning "lord" or "master." The dominant media, fueled by corporate money, can't expose authoritarianism - because they're part of the machine that feeds it.
Instead of "dominating," we work every day to challenge the masters, the lords, the holders of dominion. But since we don't allow corporations to rule us, we also don't take their money.
