t r u t h o u t | Censorship is not always committed by an individual in some secret totalitarian government room, editing uncomfortable truths out of reporting and books. In a democracy where the vast majority of the news is financed by advertising or corporate sponsorships, the subtle censor sits in the back of a journalist's, producer's, editor's or owner's mind.

Censorship in a corporatized democracy is a tacit understanding not to offend advertisers, which means that that the nation sees reality through the distorted lens of business interests.

Since we began, Truthout and BuzzFlash have been a vital exception to the model that is followed by the mass media - and even many progressive publications. We do not accept advertising. There continues to be a good faith understanding between us and you, our readers, that the truth can't be bought.

But to continue that tradition of unfettered inquiry, we need your financial support. We understand that you receive increasing requests from many sources for contributions, but remember: we rely on our readers precisely because we have never accepted income from corporate advertising. There is no subconscious censor at Truthout and BuzzFlash; there is only our responsibility to you and the truth.

Can such a model survive in a society in which corporations call the shots? That's up to you. We must raise another $42,000 in this drive - please contribute now!
