The beeps whose volumes are settable on most workstations by using "xset
b" (haven't tried it particularly on the Suns, but running xset suggests
that pitch, volume, and duration are all tweakable). This is a separate
problem from users playing digitized sounds through the speakers, by the
way. That's annoying too, but generally not as loud. I think some users
must be setting the bells to maximum volume and then subsequent users
who don't set the bell volume at all are subject to this blaring noise
whenver programs start echoing Control-G's, for example.
