Is there any doubt that what mark currently has as a set of aliases is
nigh incomprehensible? I really think you need a script wrapped in an
eval or something similar.
Not to mention, that it's wrong. athena_manpath is a shell variable,
but it's formatted like MANPATH. So you'll need another alias to
extend that.
