It appears that some DECstations using the friendly test release may be
in an inconsistent state, if they take auto-updates. There was a mishap
on the testers cell during the editing of the release that caused the
partition to overflow and mandated that we remove the read-only volume,
leaving an incomplete release exposed for a short period of time.
If you have a friendly-test DECstation, you should check to see if you
are in an inconsistent state. Type:
tail /etc/version
If the last line contains the words "Version Update" as in the following
example, you need to take appropriate action.
Athena Workstation (DS3100) Version 7.2H Sat Dec 15 11:06:33 EST 1990
Athena Server (DS3100) Version Update Sat Dec 15 11:06:35 EST 1990
Athena Server (DS3100) Version 7.2H Sat Dec 15 11:08:17 EST 1990
Athena Workstation (DS3100) Version Update Sun Dec 16 17:52:06 EST 1990
Athena Workstation (DS3100) Version 7.2J Sun Dec 16 17:52:36 EST 1990
Athena Server (DS3100) Version Update Sun Dec 16 17:52:40 EST 1990
If the machine is in this state, become root, and type the following:
ed /etc/version
$d
w
q
After this, let your machine deactivate and finish the update (7.2K is
the current release).
We were not expecting to encounter problems that would necessitate the
exposure of an inconsistent release and regret any inconvenience that
this may have caused.
