Athena Release 7.2 is now available for "friendly-test".
If you are a the proud owner of a "friendly-test" machine, you can now
update to the latest and greatest:
To determine if your workstation is a "friendly-test" machine, type:
hesinfo `hostname` cluster
If the line:
syslib e40test-sys
appears in the data returned, then you may proceed with the update. If
this line does not appear, do not even consider taking the release (talk
to a member of Release Engineering if you want your workstation to
become a friendly-test machine).
We do encourage that all friendly testers take the update, and we shall
be strongly encouraging it in a couple of days by forcing all friendly
test machines to be using the new packs.
To update your machine:
1) Let the machine deactivate.
Hit CTRL-P at the "Hit any key to start" prompt, and
login as "root". The default root password is "mrroot".
For those who have installed Mark's new XDM, hit CTRL-P at
the login banner, and wait until you get the login: prompt.
Press and release the CTRL key, and then login as "root".
(The shutdown of X quite often does not reset the terminal
correctly, such that the CTRL key needs to be pressed again).
2) Type:
/bin/athena/detach -h -n -a
/bin/athena/attach -h -n e40test-sys
/etc/shutdown now
3) It will take about 30 seconds for the machine to shutdown. After
30 seconds, you will see a warning message of the form:
WARNING: Something is hung (wont die); ps axl advised
Ignore it.
You should now see a # prompt. Press <RETURN> and make sure a
new # prompt appears on the next line. If it appears on the
same line, typing
/usr/ucb/reset (which will not appear in this situation)
will correct the problem. This problem has been most evident
if you force a shutdown while X is running (ie. not following
the directions in step 1).
4) Type:
/srvd/update_ws
This may ask you to press <RETURN> or prompt you for other information.
The prompts should be intelligible (you've no doubt gone through all
these questions during previous updates; there's nothing new to this
this update).
5) After the update says it has updated the version number and another
# prompt has appeared, type:
/etc/reboot -q
N.B.:
1. Using Andrew with 7.2
If you take the 7.2 release and currently attach "andrew", you
should attach "tandrew" instead.
2. Warnings for RT friendly testers:
a. Make sure your machine has been re-partitioned, as was
strongly recommended for the 7.0 release. The update
script not permit you to take the 7.2 release unless you
are using the new partition sizes. Contact Athena
Operations, or send mail to <hotline@athena.mit.edu> if
your machine requires re-partitioning and re-installing.
b. Make sure your RT is running at least version 7.0 before
attempting to take the 7.2 update. Updating pre-7.0
workstations is no longer supported, and will most likely
cause your machine to hang.
3. DECstation updates
If you wish to register your DECstation as a friendly-test
machine (there are none currently listed as such), please
contact Release Engineering.
That's all folks!
If you have any problems with updating a friendly test machine, contact
Release Engineering <release@ATHENA.MIT.EDU>
If you have encounter any problems with the release, send the bug
reports to <testers@athena.mit.edu>
