Two things: xlogin is available for the PMAX and you should logout at
least once a day.
People who are testing the new Xlogin are reminded that they should
logout at least once a day. I will be fixing bugs in the programs,
which necessitates replacing binaries. If you do not logout at least
once each day, the binaries that your machine is running may be
removed and could cause the machine to panic.
Xlogin is now available for testing on the DECstation. The same
instructions apply:
I'm looking for volunteers to try the new xlogin. It is currently
available for vaxen, RTs, and DECstations. You should only install
this on private machines, and the machine must have AFS as for the
test I will not be copying files onto the root, but will be refering
to them by absolute AFS pathnames.
To install the new Xlogin:
1) logout of your workstation
2) ^P login on the console as root
3) attach xdm
4) run /mit/xdm/install-test
5) if the script runs without error, logout immediately.
This script will start up the new xlogin in 30 seconds to a minute.
If you install this, and are no longer able to login, you can back out
by:
1) reboot the workstation single user
2) fsck -p
3) mv /etc/ttys.old /etc/ttys
4) ^D
This test only includes the new xlogin, it does not include any
changes to the xsession file, end_session, session_gate, or xlogout.
Known problems: when running olh, techinfo, barton, MITVMA, or moira
before logging in, these will not time out, the user must quit to get
another login screen. This will be fixed before release.
To reconfigure the console, use "xrdb -merge filename" to load your
resources onto the X server, then run /mit/xdm/@sys/bin/config_console.
The resources it currently honors are:
Console*window.geometry
Console*foreground
Console*background
More of the standard resources will be added before code cut.
This design is not completely frozen yet (that's why we're sending it
to testers before code cut). If you have suggestions or bugs, please
send them to testers@athena.mit.edu.
