Sounds like a disk going bad....
Can someone check the hardware on the machine as it sounds like the real
prblem...

Subject: dead VAXstation 2 / RC under 7.4 friendly test

Note subject. I have a VAXstation 2 / RC that I had to reboot because the TK-50
drive built in would not recognize the tape device (this had happened to me
previously (under 7.3), and the remedy was to reboot which always fixed the
problem before. I rebooted with shutdown -s now. When the login screen came
back, THe login started and I got a message about "illegal instruction" in
the console window, then a message to try "login without customization" and
to repair my damaged dot files. I tried this, and I could not log in (the
screen blanked, then returned to the initial Athena login screen).
I do not know if 7.4 caused the problem or not, as I had been running 7.4
successfully for about a week before I tried to reboot to use my tape drive.
I do need to use the tape drive a lot, and would really appreciate it if you
could point me to someone who can fix this ASAP. THanks!
