Dear Colleagues,
If you've noticed a different smell on campus this spring it may be due to a
new style of mulch on the landscaped areas. This dark mulch, now the new
trend in garden landscaping, is from pine trees but is aged to obtain a
darker color. When first installed it may have a "farm-type" of smell that
dissipates after the first day or so.
In past years Grounds Services used the darker mulch in Killian Court for
Commencement and used a lighter pine mulch, which also has a strong smell
when first installed, around the rest of campus. This year, the dark mulch
program was expanded and our Grounds Services staff members are almost
finished placing the new mulch around the many landscaped areas on campus.

Spring Garden Walk hosted by our Grounds gardeners. See the MITAC website
