duplex printing queue disabled on Athena -- or glitch?

Until sometime late this afternoon or tonight, Athena printers accepted
printed two-sided at the command, e.g., lpr -Pfiber2
This feature is now disabled -- the same command that produced two-sided
output this afternoon is now producting single-sided output.
Is this a change that affects all ways of printing 2-sided on these
printers? If so, it will waste LOTS of paper.
I've seen this change on 2 printers fiber and metis.
Metis was definitely printing 2-sided about 5 p.m. but not after 7.
