I do a lot of work in 1-142, and I've noticed the following syndrome at
least once a day lately. It seems to affect me and other people in the
cluster simultaneously:
- The Console starts logging messages like:
afs: Lost contact with file server 18.158.0.60 in cell athena.mit.edu
(all multi-homed ip addresses down for the server)
- Pine freezes intermittently and complains of losing contact with the
server.
- Mozilla times out on reaching some sites.
- I intermittently lose the ability to read from or write to my home
directory.
- Zephyr seems unaffected.
- It is impossible to log in on machines in the cluster.
These symptoms tend to come together and then all go away after a little
while.
Is this a known issue? If I don't want to be inconvenienced by this
syndrome, should I stop using 1-142 for now and move to another cluster?
If so, how will I know when the problem's solved, so I can move back?
