zip drive problem

When I attempted to read the zip drive on m56-129-26.mit.edu, I obtained:
athena% mdir z:
ld.so.1: mdir: fatal: relocation error: file mdir: symbol media_oldaliases: referenced symbol not found
Killed
Also, an attempt to format the disk gave:
athena% mpartition -c -t 96 -h 64 -s 32 -b 32 z:
mpartition: init: open: No such file or directory
The OLC consultant believes this is a hardware problem.
