The W20 machine room will once again be losing power for two
intervals this coming Thursday (16 July) night / Friday (17 July)
morning.
The timing of the second outage is somewhat variable; originally
it was scheduled for 6am-7am, though empiricity suggests that
it may very well take place any time between midnight and 7am.
Some SIPB servers will have an outage shortly after the second power
outage terminates. Since SIPB equipment is currently on UPSes adequate
to withstand the outages, this should be the only outage experienced,
and should last about 5 minutes per server.
The following SIPB servers will be affected:
The SIPB AFS cell (reynelda, but not ronald-ann or rosebud)
News service on news.mit.edu (senator-bedfellow)
Many discuss meetings (including those on charon and bloom-picayune)
www.mit.edu (the SIPB web server, dandelion-patch)
The RTFM archive of usenet periodic postings (penguin-lust)
hacks.mit.edu (IHTFP Hack Gallery server)
usenet-addresses.mit.edu
In order to conserve UPS time, some non-essential SIPB services
will most likely be shut down before the power shutdown begins,
and turned on afterward. Most users should not notice the absense of
these services, but they include:
news-transport.mit.edu (bloom-beacon)
u6.mit.edu (anxiety-closet.mit.edu)
Please direct any concerns to sipb-staff@mit.edu.
Zephyr notices will be sent to instance consult.
Sorry for the late notice.
