hello,

i am having a little problem with the CDROM drive in the private
MECH ENG athena cluster. i was working on my thesis in frame when
the machine crashed as i tried to import a .eps file. i was also
using the audio cd-player at the time using "cdplayer" and it was
still playing when the computer froze up. so i had to reboot the
computer with the cd still playing since i couldn't turn it off since
the computer was frozen. so now when i try to start the cd player
using either "cdplayer" or "cdman" it says:
> Can't access CD-ROM drive: Permission denied
so i tried using OLC and asked them what to do,
the guy suggested i try to log on as root and
type:
>chmod 666 /devices/iommu@0,10000000/subs@0,10001000/espdma@5,8400000/esp@5,8800000/sd@6,0:c,raw
but i couldn't log on as root since i'm on a private workstation and
the athena root password doesn't work here.
so then the guy at OLC suggested i send you guys
an email. here's what he wrote:

Try contacting the athena hardware hotline. Send email to
hotline@mit.edu telling them the problem and that it occured after
you had to reboot the workstation. They'll help you out.

in the meantime I'll leave this question inthe queue should
another consultant have any better ideas. :-)

Thank you for using olc!

so that's the story. i'm dying without my music.
please help! people in the cluster are noisy and
talk too loud and i'd like to drown them out with
my music...

patricia
