Please don't drop the cc line when replying to mail. It allows us to
track the mail, and deal if someone goes on vacation, or something.

Sure enough, it was missing hesiod information. This may actually
explain why it never updated. It appears that the hesinfo was
accidently dropped in mid-1997 when the machine was moved to building
12 (it was left attached to the old IP address). I've put it back.
If you still can't log in in the morning, then you should log in as
root and reboot the machine. With a little luck, it will even have
automatically updated to 8.1 when you get in in the morning. (You can
check by looking at the last line of /etc/athena/version.)

Sorry about the confusion.
