Dear Hotline,
I am having trouble with my athena SUN sparc 5 machine,
ElValle.mit.edu, which is under an athena contract.
I am not certain if the problem is with hardware or the operating
system, please let me know if this is the right address for my
problem.
The problem is that the machine keeps running out of space:
NOTICE: alloc: /: file system full
But, I haven't put anything in the / file system. A report gives
elvalle% df -k
Filesystem kbytes used avail capacity Mounted on
/dev/dsk/c0t3d0s0 30783 27715 0 100% /

so that there are about 28 MB under /, but I don't know where they
are, because if I do a disk usage count, I get
elvalle% du -dks /
15091
which makes me think that the disk is somehow confused and some basic
counter is corrupted.
Could you please have someone come by soon and look at this. The
problem is that the OS uses / for so many basic things, that the
machine is basically useless except as a dumb X-terminal at this
point. (I can't even send email from it, for instance.)
Thanks,
,
