m66-080-7.mit.edu was failing to reactive because it was missing /srvd
(reactive couldn't find kdestroy). I rebooted it, and it had the same
problem. It looked like its AFS cache was corrupted (ls in
/usr/athena/bin produced a mixture of the contents of files in the dev
cell and random garbage).
So since the machine appeared to be broken enough that it was going to
need to be reinstalled anyway, I tried (more to see if I had guessed
correctly what was wrong) to delete the AFS cache from single user
mode. But it paniced despite being single-user (must have been more
than cache corruption), so I powered it off. It's really going to
need to be reinstalled now. :-)
