This poor SGI is doing something extremely bizarre. On power up
the machine appears to boot cleanly (the messages that scroll by all
look normal) it gets to the point where it says
logins allowed (or permitted or whatever the exact phrasing is)
and then is theoretically supposed to start X and the athena login
screen. However when it begins to do this the monitor goes dark
and comes back up with a grey screen with the red x as the mouse
cursor. (Kind of like when you run /usr/gfx/setmon to reset the
refresh rate -- that sort of hardware reset flash). It never displays
anything else. The athena login screen is actually there somewhere
bevcause if you move the mouse to the correct spot it changes to the
insert type mouse pointer and you can actually log in and get the
hourglass as its loading etc etc...all with a completely grey screen.
Essentially nothing viewable ever comes up.
(Whoever comes over to look at it may want to wander around the w20
cluster, there are a few machines with little signs on them saying
various things are wrong.)
