The floppy drive on infocalypse, a Sparc Classic in the Watchmaker
Zone (e40-342-bugs-3), doesn't work any more. If you try accessing
the floppy drive, either by using mtools or by directly accessing the
vold devices under /vol, you get a lot of console errors like
21:57 fd0: read failed (40 20 0)
21:57 fd0: crc error blk 0
21:57 fd0: read failed (44 1 0)
21:57 fd0: bad format
21:57 fd0: read failed (40 20 0)
21:57 fd0: crc error blk 0
21:57 fd0: read failed (40 4 10)
21:57 fd0: bad format
(In case anyone cares, these are syslogs to kern.info.)
If you kill vold and try accessing /dev/[r]diskette directly, you get
an I/O error, although no syslogs.
I was able to repeat this with a number of DOS disks, some of which
were newly formatted on a DOS machine. The disks are readable by a
different Zone machine (a Sparc 5). Therefore, it's probably a
hardware problem.

PS. If you want to take the machine down for maintenance, you should
check with Bruce Lewis <brlewis@mit.edu> in e40-342c first.
If you have trouble logging in, probably it's because the machine
is running more than one X server, due to an unrelated software
problem... If this is the case, you should get me, Bruce or Greg
Hudson to log in remotely and restart dm.
