Hi all,
At approx. 2:15 this afternoon Katie and Alex P. had intercepted some
zephyr msg's stating that some Athena hardware may be on fire in the 1-115
electronic classroom. I had immediately called P.P. who was already in route
to the scene. Joe Welch and I responded from the Athena cluster support side.
P.P. was on the scene sniffing out all the monitors. Joe and I have shut all
the workstations down. Their was a heavy burning electrical smell that had
filled this room. P.P. was convinced that it was one of the monitors. Joe and
I were convinced that the problem lied in the ceiling. After convincing P.P.
that all the hardware was o.k. they started to check out the cooling system
in the ceiling.
A badly burnt out motor was found, which has caused the heavy odor in the
room. There was also a pipe leaking from the ceiling as well. Joe and I have
spoken with the P.P. people on site, and have made the following suggestions/
arrangements. P.P. was to go back to the shop and see if they had a motor in
stock, or if they had to go out and purchase one. They were to notify the
Operations Center, who would then page me with the current status of the
situation. I have contacted P.P. 3 times to find out what was happening. I just
now found out that no motor was in stock, and that they will have to purchase
one on Thursday. The burnt motor has been removed.
The P.P. supervisor and others at this location did not honor my request
regarding the call back I was waiting for. Therefore, I explained to the
Operations Center, that classes had to be canceled for this evening, and most
likely on Thursday. It was clearly stated that the communication between them
and me on this situation was critical, and that it was also critical that
ACS knew what was going on regarding the scheduling of classes.
Things that now need to take place under the WORK ORDER # of 809945
are as follows:
              1. Motor replacement
              2. Cooling air filters need replacing.
              3. Pipe leak needs to be repaired.
According to the Operation Center, all this work is to take place all at once.
However, I do not know when!

Joe and I have brought all the workstations back up, except for the row at the
rear of the room. This was a safety measure in case the leak got worse. At this
point in time, there is no danger to any of the hardware.

                           --Lou
