The island testing of our gas turbine generator began at 12:30am this
morning ( Wed 22 ). Before the testing began, we started up our emergency
diesel generator at the plant and picked up the emergency power loop so
that there would have been no disturbances to life safety power should
problems have occurred.

Our gas turbine generator easily maintained power to the campus load when
we opened our ties to Cambridge Electric. We also performed this "island
testing" when we were exporting power to Celco. The generator instantly
decreased power output, and maintained power to our campus load. Lastly, we
tested our load shed scheme and proved its successful operation. However,
one of the tests that Cambridge Electric performed did not work correctly.
This particular test, a transfer trip test initiated from the Putman
Station in North Cambridge failed. Celco will be troubleshooting their
equipment along with our support until the problem is found and corrected.
This troubleshooting should have no affect on MIT. Testing was completed
shortly after 3am.

We wish to thank the MIT community for the cooperation extended to us in
performing these very necessary tests. Representatives from MIT information
services, MIT LEES ( electrical engineering lab) , the Cambridge wiring
inspectors, our equipment supplier ABB, Commonwealth Electric and Cambridge
Electric participated in witnessing the testing which was performed by
physical plant along with ABB and Celco.

Thank you all again for your cooperation.

Bill Wohlfarth for Vicki Sirianni, Director of Physical Plant
