Moira will be unavailable at times tonight, as it is every night, for
backup and updates. But tonight, I'll be starting the updates at
about 10pm. (They usually start at 12:30, and run until about 3:30.)
SCHEDULE:
Saturday, November 18 (tonight) starting at 10pm.
REASON:
To change users' shell in Moira from "/bin/csh" to
"/bin/athena/tcsh". [see below]
SERVICES:
Moira.
IMPACT:
'moira', 'blanche', the *maint commands, and anything else
which queries or makes changes in the Moira database. This is
a regular outage, but will be running a few hours earlier
tonight than usual.
If "hesinfo $USER passwd" shows your shell (the last thing on the
return line) as "/bin/csh", then you are actually getting
/bin/athena/tcsh as your shell when you log in to an Athena
workstation or dialup host. This is achieved with a software kludge
on some platforms, and a symbolic link on others. Translating the
shells will take one more (small) step out of porting Athena to new
platforms, will allow people to actually choose the shell /bin/csh if
they want it, and will result in "Athena" (Moira and Hesiod) no longer
lying to users about what shell they actually use.
