The referenced workstation has the annoying habit of spontaneously dying
on me, twice in ten minutes. (ca. 7:30 pm, 7 Sep 94). Symptoms of death:

1st time: machine hung for about 30 seconds, then the left half
of the display went to black. The right half of the display kept the
same items on screen, only color-shifted into the blue spectrum. The
entire display then flickered into the standard greymap, then to black,
then back to the greymap. The console reappeared, with the message
"Cleaning up..." and the login window soon appeared...

2nd time: No hang time - the machine flicked to console login
mode, then back to the X display, again half black, half blue shifted,
then continued as the first time had....

After the second logout, Chris Shabsin (shabby@mit) logged in as root
and looked at the processes currently running. Nothing appeared to be
unusual.
