Athena workstation TAUTOG not booting.

A student reported to me that the Athena workstation TAUTOG (128.128.16.220)
would not boot. This is what I observed. On pressing the reset button
in the back of the DECstation 3100 the system would perform its self-tests
7.6.5.4.3.2.1 and then give a >> prompt. After entering boot at the prompt
the messages displayed are as follows:
no device and $Path not set
couldn't load

This was tried several times with the same results. I also tried bringing
up the system from a power off condition with the same results. As I recall,
in the past a simple boot command with no options or arguments would work.
