Hi,

I am having troubles reading and writing floppy disks on the Athena
workstation in my office. Here are the particulars of me, my machine,
and my location:

	Name: Wayne H. Hagman
	Phone: X3-2087
Location:	Room 10-026 (Inside Room 10-050)
	Machine:	VAXstation 3100

When I try to read and write from/to floppies using `tar' or
`gun_tar,' I get error messages such as the following from a
gnu_tar tvMf /dev/rfloppy operation:

-rw------- olli/wheel 385 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/realwrite.c
-rw------- olli/wheel 88815 Jun 30 17:30 1993 ./simuc/src/simuc-lb.c
gnu_tar: read error on /dev/rfloppy : I/O error
gnu_tar: read error on /dev/rfloppy : I/O error
gnu_tar: Skipping to next file header...
-rw------- olli/wheel 1092 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/symtab.h
-rw------- olli/wheel 1511 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/SYSTEM.MC
-rw------- olli/wheel 475 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/realread.c
-rw------- olli/wheel 1898 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/sintest.sim
-rw------- olli/wheel 246 May 13 17:48 1993 ./simuc/src/test.sim

In addition, the console window shows the following error messages:

15:37 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error
15:38 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error
15:38 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error
15:38 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error
15:38 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error
15:38 sd2:HARD ERROR: compare error

These messages happened as I was trying to read a floppy using
`gnu_tar.' I had written the floppy using `gnu_tar' on another
VAXstation3100. I successfully read this floppy on the other
VAXstation 3100 and on a DECstation 5000.

I halted my system, power-cycled, and rebooted to see if this would
correct the problem - it did not. I still receive the same sorts of
errors.

These happenings lead me to believe that my floppy drive is having
problems.

Would you please check this out for me?

				Thanks,
				Wayne Hagman
