bloom-picayune, a DECstation 3100 server in W20-575A, had a failure of
an RZ23 disk on Saturday, December 26. Running rzdisk -s showed over
80 LBNs with unrecoverable read errors. fsck reported a number of
harderr and retryerr diagnostics, including some with "SnsKey =
HARDWARE ERROR". Some bad-block reassignments were performed, but new
bad blocks were located while this was being done (i.e., the disk
appeared to be getting progressively worse). All data has been
temporarily moved to other disks on the same machine.
We would be interested in obtaining a new RZ23 drive.
However, we would not like to schedule a service visit at the moment.
This is a critical server machine and the people most familiar with
its services are away at present. Ideally, an RZ23 could be ordered
(if necessary) and held for us until these people return (probably
within the next few days).
