workstation problem

I logged into workstation number 18.186.0.32 and cannot get an xterm window
to appear. There was an error message in a console window on the screen
before I logged in.
I have a question of immediate importance: how do I reboot the machine so
that I am no longer logged in? Or can I logoff remotely from another
machine? (I have sensitive files that I don't want students to see in my
account.)
