Is he encountering the picture-display stuff installed on the fishbowl
machines? If so, then it seems that the code isn't as
user-transparent as it's supposed to be....

To be more specific, (and this has only happened a couple of times), the
monitor is black, with standrad writing of various colors, (usuaLLY RED or
white), and every line explains what the computer is doing (eg. "searching
bus8909345" "attaching dfsa", etc . . . )_ It is also scrolling every couple
of seconds. I just wait until it says something like "searching for network:"
or "searching for data base:" and I just type "Athena" and press return. This
usually does the trick and after about a minute, I see the familiar loogin
screen.
