1) Phigs if memory serves correctly is a graphical user interface to a
display - similar to penplot, blox, but better. (It's more of a
standard).
From the man page installed in the locker....
VAX PHIGS is a device-independent, 3D graphics support
system that controls the definition, modification, and
display of hierarchical graphics data. It is based on
the draft PHIGS standard currently proposed by the
International Standards Organization (ISO) and American
National Standards Institute (ANSI) standard
organizations.
.SH Extensions
.PP
VAX PHIGS provides a number of extensions to the proposed
PHIGS standard. These extensions are based on the PHIGS+
proposed industry standard and include depth-cueing,
hidden-surface removal, lighting, and polygon meshes.
Depth-cueing, hidden-surface removal, and lighting are
provided to help make the 3D graphics objects appear more
realistic. Polygon meshes is a mechanism of providing
VAX PHIGS with polygonal 3D data in such way that VAX
PHIGS may be able to perform its computations on the data
more efficiently.
2) Looking at the files - I would say it comes from DEC. I remember
Michelle having a full set of phigs manuals outside her office in the
cabinet which is now outside your office. (last I remember the phigs
manuals were still there).
3) I would lose it. Clearly the demand has been so little over the past
two years. My guess is that she was trying to evaluate it or something.
Oh yeah - it's for the vax....
