I need a few good beta testers for MacSLIP. Yes, that's right,
MacSLIP for MacTCP. I'm specifically looking for people
who will give it a good test with virtual memory and 32 bit mode
as well as a wide variety of SLIP implementations (on the other
end) and MacTCP applications.
In order to forestall 10,000,000 questions showing up in my mail
tomorrow, here are some details about MacSLIP:
- It does support TCP Header Compression (CSLIP).
- It does not support PPP (yet).
- It will not be freeware but it won't be too expensive either.
I'm working on a couple of options for distribution.
- It supports a connection script for dialing the phone, logging in, etc.
- It currently requires System 7. Also MacTCP 1.1.
- I've tested it with a fairly wide range of applications that use MacTCP
including NCSA Telnet, MacX, XferIt, Intercon's NFS/Share, Eudora,
and TheNews. Sorry for any misspellings. Some of the above may be
trademarks.
- It has been tested on several machines including a Mac II, IIfx,
Powerbook 140, and SE/30.
The only serious known problem right now is really a MacTCP problem.
MacTCP has problems with its timers across slow links, not restricted
to SLIP links. Hopefully, Apple will release a fix for this someday.
Meanwhile, you will probably see lots of retransmitted packets when
sending data from the Mac to another host over a slow link.
I only need a few beta testers. If there are no major problems
encountered, I hope to go into full distribution in a few weeks -- but
please don't bug me if my schedule, er, slips. :-) I have a full time
job that doesn't include developing MacSLIP, plus I have other
consulting contracts.
If you think you would be a good beta test candidate, tell me why.
I'll reply to those who I think will be good sites. Otherwise, thanks
in advance for your interest. I may not have time to answer all the
mail I'm likely to get. It is my goal to be able to deliver a solid
product as soon as possible. I know that lots of people out there are
impatient to be able to use MacTCP over a SLIP link. I was impatient
enough to spend lots of long nights writing and debugging code.
