What's unclear about the recent spate of Even Bigger Brother
schemes is whether they are stalking horses for negotiations
to move the middle toward the administration, to get more when
a compromise is reached with Congressional supporters of
stronger crypto, weaker snooping.
All the proposals appear to be deliberately overreaching, constitutionally
and for PR. Goss's bills, FIDNet, CESA, have the same go-to-hell
markings.
Could be bigger budgets for other programs are being crafted in the
backroom. Snoop tools and CPUs for NSA, a build-up of expensive
equipment and personnel for the counterterrorist interagenciies.
Tim's right to push for better counter-counter tools, question is what
is being planned that's not yet in the ga-ga newspapers. Anybody know
who's leaking the government's goodies?
