NJ HP snatched me off US 80 when I was broke and walking home to
NYC. Said nobody walks in northern Jersey, not in the middle of oncoming
Interstate traffic. Told Smokie middle of the freeway was my protection from
backyard mobsters who'd been target practicing me with BBs as I walked
the verge, first upright, then crouched, then belly-crawled as the l'il
fuckers
called ahead. Dozens lined the top of the sound barriers, pinging my
hardhat and Kevlar johns.

You want to chew this, the lady copy said, rubbing her Glockster. Then shut
the up. Those kids are the future. She kicked me out at GW Bridge, NJ side,
shit, another mile to wade through ambushers lurking the steel, ordinaries
in autos hurling bags of dogshit.

In NYC, I hugged the first cop I saw, and it poked me away with a head-scarred
baton, said, been visiting the Garden State, huh.
