From my memory, it was Gilmore that decided "Something Must
Be Done", and they came up with the idea of the three separate
lists--which Vulis then sabotaged by posting something potentially
libelous about Stronghold--a product of the company Sandy was working
for--this post didn't make it into any of the three lists (edited,
rejects, unedited), and everything blew up.

If I remember correctly, this happened in either January, or
Feburary. I'm going to try to get an old disk on line this week, I'll
take a look and see if I have anything left from then.

I'll make the changes to the SSZ CDR text to reflect this, changing Eric to
Eric or John and the date to sometime between late '96 to early '97.

The last comment I could find from Eric was during 96.09.19 - 96.09.25 which
was about his view the list had changed and he had changed and that was
life. Even though Eric wasn't on the list at the time it was clear he was
aware of what was going on.

Vulis' comment wasn't the only traffic that didn't make it either if memory
serves.

The piece I'm looking for is the specific email that set the deadline. If
memory serves it was a Monday which is what drove Igor and I to try to get it
done by the weekend before the toad list(s) went down permanently. I also
remember that I was working on a Sev 1 Crit-Sit at work and I couldn't spend
the time to do the work independently so I used Igor's work and copied his
setup except for my split (ie cpunks & cypherpunks) accounts.

Thanks ahead of time for whatever you can do to tie these parties and dates
down.

The next issues I'll be adding will be Bell and CJ. I must admit I'm a
little uncertain how to express all those events in a 5-10 line paragraph
though. I also want to add a section describing how the CDR works and steps
to setup nodes and the scripts we use.

One observation I can make, after looking at several years of traffic.
Despite comments to the contrary, the list hasn't changed a hell of a
lot.

Also, I've been asked privately if others can use the text. Please feel
free. My ultimate goal is to build a new up-to-date cypherpunks homepage.
I've already registered cpunks.org to that end.
