Thousands of Russians volunteer to fight in Kosovo
By Chloe Arnold in London

Serb armies could soon be joined by thousands of Russian volunteers keen to
fight against NATO forces. Russians from Kaliningrad to Vladivostok are
signing up in their thousands to fly to Kosovo to protect their Slav brothers
from the NATO onslaught.

To encourage volunteers to join the war, Andrei Manilov, head of the youth
section of the ultra-nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, has set up offices
all over the country. Even as I spoke to him, the number of volunteers rose
from 2,700 to around 3,500. Telephone lines were only opened on Wednesday
evening as the bombs began to fall.

"People are outraged by what is happening in Serbia," he said. "This is
exploitation - despotism - on behalf of the Americans and British. This may
even herald the beginning of the third world war."

Russians are so keen to fight alongside the Serbs, because Russia and Serbia
are traditional allies, Manilov said.

Rumours are flying that the Russian government is trying to avoid a head-on
confrontation with NATO, because they are currently negotiating a multi-
billion dollar loan with the International Monetary Fund.

But with hundreds of protesters pelting eggs and jars of ink at the American
embassy in Moscow, and embassy officials advising staff to buy open tickets
home in case of emergency, the country is becoming increasingly volatile.

Manilov said the Liberal Democratic Party was working closely with the
Yugoslav embassy to finalise preparations for the volunteers to fly to Kosovo.
People from all walks of life, some with children, some even with
grandchildren have signed up. But he said only those with a strong military
background will be sent to the war zone.

"There has been an explosion of patriotism in this country nobody would have
dreamed of," he said. "It is difficult to imagine where the situation might
lead."
